This piece is an olpe, a jug used both in domestic settings and at ritual banquets, and often included as part of a burial offering. Its ovoid body, tall neck, and trilobed rim are characteristic of a type widely found throughout the Mediterranean, valued for the functionality of its design. Made of Black Red Ware, it stands out for its characteristic hallmarks: the dark surface, achieved through a complex firing process in a reducing atmosphere, and the decoration of fine horizontal bands in light tones, an ornamental motif of geometric tradition that emphasizes the vessel’s profile. The precision of the craftsmanship and mastery of the technique reflect the high degree of specialization achieved by Cypriot workshops during this period.
Far from being limited to local consumption, these pieces circulated along the major trade routes of the eastern Mediterranean, becoming one of the most representative products of Cypriot craftsmanship, as Cyprus also established itself during this period as one of the major commercial centers of the eastern Mediterranean. Its privileged location between the Aegean world, Phoenicia, and the Near East fostered the exchange of goods, ideas, and artistic traditions, driving the production of high-quality ceramics.
