BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Mycenaean spouted vessel; Cyprus, Late Helladic Period, c. 1400–1300.
Terracotta.
Measurements: 16.5 x 14 cm (diameter).
Its pear-shaped profile, topped by a narrow neck and featuring three handles attached to the shoulder, corresponds to a type widely documented at the island’s major archaeological sites. Designed to hold and pour liquids, these jugs were used primarily for the storage and transport of valuable goods, such as perfumed oils, wines, or ointments. Their small size and careful craftsmanship indicate that they were not ordinary household vessels, but rather objects intended for table service, for the circulation of prestige goods, or as part of burial goods, where they accompanied the deceased as symbols of wealth and the trade networks that characterized the Mycenaean world.
The decoration, consisting of horizontal bands and geometric motifs painted in dark tones on the light surface of the terracotta, reflects the ornamental language characteristic of the Mycenaean tradition, adapted by Cypriot workshops; in fact, there are highly similar pieces in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. AM 2265) and the Louvre Museum (inv. Enk. 49 4619), confirming that they belong to a well-established model within Cypriot ceramic production in the Mycenaean tradition
