BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Anforiskos; Cyprus, Cypro-Geometric–Cypro-Archaic period, c. 950–600 B.C.
Two-color pottery.
Measurements: 17 x 13 cm (diameter).
This amphoriskos dates from a period of great prosperity for the island of Cyprus, which benefited from its strategic position along the trade routes of the eastern Mediterranean. It belongs to a well-known type, characterized by a globular body, a cylindrical neck, two vertical handles, and a small ring-shaped foot, intended for the storage of valuable liquids such as perfumed oils, ointments, or essences. The existence of a virtually identical specimen in the collection of Cornell University (United States), with inventory no. 74.074.018, confirms the widespread use and standardization of this model within Cypriot ceramic production. The decoration, executed in the characteristic two-color style, combines bands painted in dark tones against the light background of the clay with a wavy border beneath the rim—a traditional geometric motif that defines much of the production of the period. The harmony of its proportions and the restraint of its ornamentation reflect the high technical level achieved by Cypriot workshops, which were capable of developing their own artistic language without abandoning influences from the Phoenician, Syrian, and Aegean worlds.
In addition to their everyday use, vessels of this type were frequently included in burial goods, where they played a symbolic role linked to prestige and ritual. Their combination of functionality, formal balance, and decorative refinement makes the two-color amphoriskoi one of the most representative examples of Cypriot Iron Age pottery.
