A testament to the pottery tradition that developed in Cyprus during antiquity, this kalathos-type vessel features an inverted truncated cone-shaped body, with a flat base and a wide, flared, horizontal upper rim. Its exterior surface is decorated with concentric bands and stripes, rendered in dark oxide over the natural tone of the clay, following the stylistic conventions of the Cypriot Geometric style.
The Cypro-Geometric period (ca. 1050–750 B.C.) corresponds to a pivotal phase in the ancient art of Cyprus, marked by the evolution of pottery following the end of the Bronze Age. During this period, Cypriot workshops developed a distinctive style that combined local traditions with influences from the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean. Their ceramic production is characterized by balanced forms and decoration based on geometric motifs, such as horizontal bands, concentric lines, zigzags, and repetitive patterns rendered in dark tones against the natural color of the clay. The simplicity and order of these compositions reflect a taste for harmony and visual rhythm. Many of these pieces have been found in funerary contexts, forming part of grave goods in ancient Cypriot necropolises, where, in addition to their practical function, they took on ritual and symbolic significance.
