BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Amphorisk; Cyprus, Cypro-Geometric period, c. 1050–750 B.C.
Two-color pottery.
Measurements: 10 x 10 cm.
This amphorisk belongs to the Cypriot ceramic production of the early Iron Age, a period in which the island experienced remarkable economic and cultural expansion thanks to its privileged position along the trade routes of the eastern Mediterranean. Its shape corresponds to a type widely found in Cyprus, featuring a compact, somewhat globular body, a narrow neck, two vertical handles, and a small ring-shaped foot, designed to hold particularly valuable substances such as perfumed oils, ointments, or aromatic essences.
The decoration follows the principles of the Cypriot two-color repertoire, based on the contrast between the light surface of the clay and the application of motifs painted in dark tones. The horizontal bands and geometric elements that run along the vessel demonstrate the continuity of an ornamental tradition inherited from the Geometric period, characterized by precise lines and a balance between decoration and form. The simplicity of the design highlights the skill of Cypriot workshops in creating functional objects endowed with a marked aesthetic quality.
During the Cypro-Geometric period, Cyprus maintained close ties with the cultures of the Aegean and the Near East, incorporating external influences while developing its own artistic language. The production of small vessels such as this amphorisk reflects both the island’s artisanal specialization and its integration into Mediterranean trade networks, where these objects likely circulated as prestige goods.
