DESCRIPTION
Head of Vishnu. India, Madhya Pradesh, 11th–12th centuries.
Carved sandstone.
Fragment of an ornamental relief.
It shows signs of erosion, especially on the sides, consistent with its age.
Measurements: 18 x 9 x 16 cm; 22 cm total height including the base.
This fragment offers an interesting insight into the religious sculpture produced in central India during the 11th and 12th centuries, a period of remarkable architectural and sculptural activity in Madhya Pradesh. The proposed chronology and provenance are consistent with regional sandstone production from the medieval period, during which images of Vishnu and his various manifestations played a prominent role in temple decorative programs.
The main face features serene features and a downward gaze, crowned by a tall, truncated-cone-shaped headdress characteristic of Vishnu’s iconography. On either side, other head forms are partially preserved, referring to the multifaceted representations of the deity and the simultaneous expression of different aspects of his nature.
