DESCRIPTION
Wall sconce with a situla handle; Rome, 2nd–3rd century A.D.
Patinated bronze.
Measurements: 8.5 x 5 x 3 cm; 9 cm (total height).
Bronze fitting designed to secure the handle of a Roman situla, decorated in relief with a frontal human face and topped by a ring. Situlae were metal vessels with a slightly truncated conical body, similar in general shape to a bucket, equipped with a removable handle. This handle was attached to the vessel by two fittings located on either side, which supported the hinge points and allowed the vessel to be lifted and carried. In addition to their practical function, these elements could feature figurative decoration.
In this example, the frontal face occupies most of the visible surface and is integrated into a simple composition, adapted to the shape of the mount. The use of bronze—a common material for this type of Roman accessory and vessel—allowed for the creation of durable pieces that were also well-suited for relief work.
