DESCRIPTION
Gothic capital; 14th century.
Carved stone.
Measurements: 33 x 25 x 26 cm.
Medieval carved stone capital, designed as an architectural element bridging the column shaft and the structure it supports. It features an ornamental composition combining geometric and plant motifs, rendered through stylized forms and schematic carving, in which decorative synthesis takes precedence.
The piece is part of the tradition of 14th-century Gothic architectural sculpture, characterized by the adaptation of ornamental motifs to the volume and structural function of the capital. Its formal language finds a stylistic parallel in an example preserved at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), inventory no. 157287-000, although this example stands out for its more synthetic and schematic interpretation of the decorative motifs.
