DESCRIPTION
Dolphin-shaped fibula; Roman Empire, 1st–2nd centuries A.D.
Bronze.
Measurements: 4 cm long
Roman fibula with a curved front featuring a stylized dolphin. Roman fibulae come in a wide variety of shapes and decorations, which attests to the importance of these objects in personal adornment. In the Roman Empire, the fibula served both a functional and ornamental purpose, as both men and women used them to fasten their peplos and cloaks. Pins served a similar function, designed to fasten heavy garments such as capes.
