DESCRIPTION
Figure of the god Bes. Egypt, Late Period, 664–332 B.C.
Terracotta.
Provenance: A. Aróstegui Collection (Madrid).
Measurements: 12.5 x 6 x 3.5 cm.
An Egyptian terracotta figure in the form of the god Bes, an ancient Egyptian deity worshiped as the protector of the home and, more specifically, of mothers, children, and childbirth. Art depicts him as a dwarf-like, bearded spirit with long hair, often sticking out his tongue. He usually appears naked or clad in a lion’s skin, and may be depicted with a large erect phallus, due to his association with love and sexual pleasure.
