DESCRIPTION
Idol, 2nd millennium B.C.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection in England.
Measurements: 13 cm (height).
Depiction of a female idol carved in the round, with simplified features in which the disc she holds in her hands is particularly emphasized. It features a zoomorphic face, modeled in such a way that an animal face can be discerned. Terracotta figures have been part of cult statuary in many cultures, representing gods, demigods, or mere mortals. Considered religious offerings, these types of sculptures became witnesses to history, from Greek to Roman culture, serving as an important form of artistic expression due to their creation from clay—a material that is easily malleable and highly durable.
