Traditional mask of the Bété ethnic group of Ivory Coast, known as Nyaba mask. It comes from the Bété ethnic group, which lives in the southwest of Ivory Coast, between the Sassandra and Badama rivers. It is distinguished by a prominent forehead, large mouth, narrow eyes and protuberances in the form of horns as a mustache to protect the face. It is made of a single piece of tropical wood.
The first function of this mask was to prepare men for war, to be worn in battle.
The exaggerated features are to scare the enemies. Later the mask could be used to preside over peace treaty ceremonies.
