Important terracotta figure belonging to the Nok culture, one of the oldest and most relevant sculptural traditions of sub-Saharan Africa. Developed in present-day Nigeria, this culture stood out for its early iron technology and for a terracotta production of extraordinary originality, considered one of the first great artistic testimonies of West Africa.

The so-called "Nok Thinker" is one of the most famous sculptural models of this culture. It is characterized by the seated figure, the body leaning forward and the head resting on the hand, a posture of strong expressive charge that has favored its identification as an image of reflection, meditation or ritual authority.

The modeling combines frontality, formal synthesis and a remarkable ornamental richness. The almond-shaped pierced eyes, the half-open mouth, the elaborate headdress, the body ornamentation and the linear incised decoration that runs along the arms, torso and legs stand out. These features are characteristic of the Nok plastic language, in which the Punctures also served a technical function during firing.

Nok sculptures usually represent human characters, animals or hybrid beings, with ornaments, complex hairstyles and attributes that suggest a ceremonial rather than an everyday function. Within this context, the present work stands out for its scale, its excellent preservation and for corresponding to the famous model of the "Nok Thinker", one of the most recognizable and appreciated typologies of this culture.

The double thermoluminescence dating, together with the CT scanner study, provides an important technical support to its cataloguing, placing it in a chronological framework coherent with the ancient Nok production and reinforcing its relevance within the collecting of ancient African art.
