BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Initiation mask. Oceania, Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea, 20th century.
Braided vegetable fiber and natural fibers.
Provenance: collected in situ by George J. Craig before 1970.
Measurements: 93 x 35 x 68 cm.

Initiation mask from Papua New Guinea, made of braided vegetable fiber and long suspended natural fibers. The piece adopts a zoomorphic form of great visual force, with an elevated and open structure reminiscent of a bird or totemic being, combining volume, lightness and an intense ritual presence.

The main body is constructed by means of an elaborate weaving of fibers, with geometric motifs in natural, ochre and black tones that run along the surface. The lateral extensions and the large frontal opening reinforce its ceremonial character, while the hanging fibers provide movement and transform the mask into an object conceived to be activated in space and in the context of dance or ritual.

This type of mask is linked to initiation and transformation ceremonies, in which the identity of the wearer was absorbed by the symbolic presence of the represented being. Beyond its ritual function, the piece has a remarkable sculptural power, where basketry, texture and form merge into a material expression of great intensity.
