BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Initiation mask. Oceania, XX century.
Braided vegetable fiber and natural fibers.
Provenance: collected by George J. Craig in situ in 1970.
Measurements: 110 x 32 x 50 cm.

Initiation mask from Oceania, made of braided vegetable fiber and long natural fibers arranged as a hair or ritual veil. The piece presents a face built by means of a vegetal framework, with schematic features and powerful expressiveness, where the organic matter retains all its visual and symbolic prominence.

The structure combines a dense, handcrafted basketwork with suspended fibers that multiply its presence in space, creating an object of strong ceremonial character. Its frontal and enveloping aspect suggests a use associated with ritual contexts, probably linked to initiation, transformation or transit ceremonies within the community.

Beyond its original function, the mask possesses a remarkable plastic intensity: the face, almost spectral, emerges among the fibers as an ancestral presence. The combination of texture, volume and movement makes the piece a particularly evocative testimony of 20th century oceanic ritual art.
