DESCRIPTION
Pre-Columbian textiles. Nazca culture, ca. 200 B.C.-700 A.D.
Gauze and camelid fiber.
With export permit.
Provenance: F. Cervera Collection.
Condition: fragmentary, with losses, tears, irregularities on the edges and chromatic alterations in accordance with the archaeological nature of the piece.
Measurements: 50 x 30 cm., 62.5 x 42 cm. with frame.
Pre-Columbian textile fragments belonging to the Nazca culture, made of camelid fiber using the gauze technique. The set preserves remains of an ornamental composition in red, earth, ochre, white and dark blue tones, with geometric motifs and small stylized elements organized in bands and delimited fields.
Despite its fragmentary state, the piece maintains a remarkable archaeological and visual strength. The clear lines, angular registers and repeated motifs allow us to recognize the refined Nazca textile language, based on the combination of geometry, color and ornamental rhythm.
Textiles occupied an essential place in the pre-Columbian cultures of the Andean area, both for their ceremonial value and for their social and symbolic function. In the Nazca world, the chromatic richness, technical precision and complexity of the designs reached an extraordinary development, turning these fragments into material testimony of one of the great textile traditions of American antiquity.
