DESCRIPTION
Pre-Columbian cloth. Nazca culture, ca. 200 B.C.-700 A.D.
Gauze and camelid fiber.
With export permit.
Condition: fragmentary, with important losses, tears, general wear, irregularities on the edges and chromatic alterations according to its age.
Measurements: 54 x 63 cm, 64 x 76 x 2 cm with frame.
Pre-Columbian textile fragment belonging to the Nazca culture, made of camelid fiber using the gauze technique. The piece presents a complex geometric composition organized in a grid, with quadrangular modules decorated with rhombuses, staggered motifs and small repetitive elements in ochre, reddish, earth and black tones.
The decorated area contrasts with a wide plain field in natural tones, delimited by a staggered line that introduces movement and visually orders the surface. This interplay between dense ornamentation and empty space gives the textile a remarkable compositional force, revealing the formal sophistication of ancient Andean textiles.
Textiles occupied an essential place in the pre-Columbian cultures of the Andean area, both for their ceremonial value and for their social and symbolic function. In the Nazca world, the chromatic richness, geometric precision and technical mastery of weaving reached an exceptional development, turning these pieces into privileged testimonies of one of the great textile traditions of American antiquity.
