BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Gope or ancestral board of the Kerewa people. Goaribari Island, Papua New Guinea, 20th century.
Carved and polychrome wood.
Provenance: collected in situ by George J. Craig before 1970; later private collection, Spain, OR.
Good state of conservation: punctual losses, abrasions and alterations of the polychromy in accordance with its age, ritual use and ethnographic nature.
Measurements: 115 x 18 cm.

Ancestral gope board of the Kerewa people, from the island of Goaribari, in the area of the Gulf of Papua. Carved in wood and decorated with natural pigments, it presents an elongated and narrow form, finished in rounded ends, with a schematic face in the superior part and a vertical composition of geometric motives in black, ochre and white tones.

The gope played an essential role in the ritual life of the communities of the Gulf of Papua, linked to the memory of the ancestors, the protection of the clan and the transmission of tutelary forces. Its iconography, of great graphic power, combines anthropomorphic features and abstract designs that condense identity, lineage and spiritual presence.

In this specimen, the frontality of the face and the rhythm of the jagged motifs on the body give the piece a remarkable visual intensity. Its restrained scale does not detract from its ceremonial character: the wood, the polychromy and the patina of use transmit the symbolic density typical of objects created for ritual contexts.
