DESCRIPTION
Funeral figurine from Komaland; Ghana, 13th–17th centuries.
Terracotta.
It has an information label on the base.
Measurements: 19.5 cm (height).
Note: This piece has been exhibited in several African art exhibitions.
Terracotta figures from Komaland, Ghana, were pieces intended to accompany the deceased in their tomb or to remind the living of their ancestors; in the latter case, they were placed on the family altar. They are therefore primarily portraits, modeled from a hard, sandy clay that requires a lengthy firing process.
