BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Bowl; China, Ming dynasty, Jiajing period, 1522-1566.
Glazed porcelain.
Measurements: 7,5 x 14,5 cm.
Chinese Jiajing period bowl, decorated with floral motifs glazed in underglaze cobalt blue, with an open composition on the outside. On the interior the decoration is organized around a smooth central band, which clearly differentiates seat from eaves. It is characterized by the very dark cobalt blue typical of the Jiajing period, the result of mixing 50% native cobalt with imported cobalt. The decorations of this time will therefore show little tonal gradation, as we see here. In addition, it is a time of persecution of Islam and resurgence of Taoism, so natural motifs will be frequent.
