BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Pair of vases. China, Qing Dynasty, Xianfeng Period, 1851- 1861.
Enameled porcelain, (Rose Family), with wooden stand.
With marks on the base.
Measurements: 132 cm (vase height), 29 cm (stand height), 161 cm (height with stand).
Vases decorated with high and low temperature enamels, some of them applied with high relief, belonging to the period of the Xianfeng emperor, as indicated by the red enamel mark on the base. Its decoration combines two ornamental styles typical of 19th century Chinese export porcelain: the thousand flowers style and the pink medallion of the Canton Rose Family. The former is a style created in the Qianlong period (1736-1795), which will last throughout the 19th century, characterized by the fact that the entire piece is decorated with all kinds of flowers, worked in a wide chromatic palette in which pink enamel predominates. Here, however, this dense background of flowers does not appear alone, but is complemented by the typical lobed cartouches of the pink medallion style, a subtype of the Canton Rose Family, which appeared in the middle of the 19th century. The pink medallion style is characterized by peach-shaped or poly-lobed medallions in reserve (in white on a colored background), housing figurative representations and depictions of flowers, birds, insects, etc., as we see here.
