Elegant Japanese porcelain vase enhanced with lacquer. Chrysanthemums and cranes, among other floral motifs and mythological animals, have been represented in gold and black on a tile-colored background. The 19th century was a period of great transformation in Japan. During the Meiji period, Japan experienced an opening to the outside world, and its decorative arts, including porcelain, became highly prized in Europe and America. Many of these vases were created for export, and combined traditional Japanese techniques with designs that appealed to Western tastes. They were often acquired by European and American collectors fascinated by Eastern aesthetics. The lacquered vessels were often decorated with traditional Japanese motifs, such as flowers, birds, landscapes and nature scenes, often inspired by Ukiyo-e art or Zen aesthetics, as seen in this beautiful vase.
