This bronze vessel is a "fang lei", a type of ritual vessel from ancient China, usually intended to contain ceremonial wine. The fang lei are characterized by their shape, lid, handles and, above all, by the elaborate decorations that usually represent synthetic and geometric animal motifs. The piece shown here reproduces models from the Shang and Zhou dynasties.
The decoration on each of the four sides of the globular body is arranged in horizontal registers divided by vertical flanges that are repeated at the corners. They combine totie masks in relief with dragons reduced to their geometric essence, incised on the walls. Masks of mythological animals alternate with zigzagging motifs. The surface has a dark green patina.
