Kutani ware is traditionally produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, and is known for its vivid colors and detailed designs. The elegant vase shown here features the characteristic "five-color" or gosai design with a preeminence of purple in combination with gold borders. Its periform body is decorated with figurative scenes depicting legendary sages in a natural setting. Floral motifs are painted on the slender neck.
