DESCRIPTION
Kutani censer. Japan, Meiji era, ca.1910.
Hand-painted ceramic.
Measurements: 21 x 14 x 14 cm.
Kutani ware is traditionally produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, and is known for its vivid colors and detailed designs. The censer features a "five-color" (gosai) design based on borders and floral motifs, which is characteristic of Kutani ware, using shades such as red, green, yellow, gold and dark blue. The sculpture on the top of the censer represents a boddisatva with a flower, probably Guanyin.
