DESCRIPTION
Pair of vases; Japan, Meiji period, c. 1890.
Hand-painted Kutani porcelain and wooden bases.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 24 x 13 cm (x2); 4 x 13 cm (bases, x2).
Pair of vases representative of Kutani porcelain from the Meiji period (1868-1912). Both are characterized by their delicate pictorial decoration and the chromatic richness of the glaze. With a globular body, elongated neck and flaring mouth, both vases have molded handles in the shape of mythological creatures, enhanced in gilt.
The surfaces are profusely ornamented with court scenes and natural landscapes, executed in a palette of red, ochre, black and gold tones, typical of the Kutani style. The motifs show human figures in refined environments, surrounded by plum blossoms and architectural elements, symbols of prosperity and ephemeral beauty.
