DESCRIPTION
19th century Japanese catana, with 18th century blade.
Bronze with enamel applications.
Measurements: 112 cm (length).
Magnificent Japanese catana, whose blade dates from the XVIII century and was later mounted in the XIX century, period in which its careful ornamentation was incorporated. The piece has a sheath (saya) richly decorated with floral motifs (roses, petunias and carnations) and figures of possibly mythological character, made in polychrome enamel on a black background.
The whole is completed with elegant golden borders that run along the surface, adding shine and contrast to the enamel decoration. Several bronze rings are arranged along the sheath, two of which, chiseled, incorporate rings for the traditional suspension system.
The harmony between the noble materials and the detail of the enamel work give this catana a remarkable historical and artistic value, reflecting the mastery of Japanese craftsmen of the Edo and Meiji periods.
