DESCRIPTION
Shrine figure Nat. Burma, 19th century.
Polychrome and gilded wood.
Measurements: 33 x 13 x 13 cm.
In the Burmese tradition, the Nats are spirits venerated parallel to Buddhism. Each Nat represents a historical or mythical figure, often marked by a tragic death. They are honored for their protection, prosperity and intercessory powers. Figures like this were placed in domestic shrines or small temples.
The figure wears a pointed crown and courtly attire; the right hand is raised (a gesture of blessing or protection), while the left hand rests on the knee. The facial features and costume are characteristic of Burmese depictions of Nats, which often combine popular animistic spirits with Buddhist iconography.
