DESCRIPTION
Large oil lamp representing the god Garuda. South India, probably Karnataka or Tamil Nadu, 18th-19th century.
Bronze.
In excellent condition.
Measurements: 37 x 33 x 18 cm.
Made in patinated bronze, this impressive ritual lamp takes the form of Garuda, the divine bird that serves as a mount for Vishnu. The figure stands erect on strong clawed legs, with wings widely spread and finely fretworked. The head, crowned by the usual conical Garuda headdress flanked with flamboyant motifs, retains the stern and majestic expression characteristic of South Indian craft traditions.
A small oil reservoir, projecting forward, extends from the chest, while behind her head a link chain allows her suspension.
The overall form, sculptural solidity, openwork design of the wings, and iconographic vocabulary are closely related to 18th-19th century Karnataka bronze lamps, although certain ornamental details-particularly the headdress and the extension of the beak-also appear in Tamil Nadu devotional metalwork of the same period. A rare and powerful example of South Indian bronze votive work, remarkable for its scale, presence and excellent state of preservation.
