BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Bowl. China, Qing Dynasty, nineteenth century.
Porcelain enameled in red.
Measurements: 12 x 23 cm.

This is a Chinese glazed ceramic bowl, globular body and compact shape, supported on three small feet, a common typology in traditional Chinese ceramics intended for both refined everyday use and study spaces. The exterior is covered with an intense red glaze, thick and slightly mottled, while the interior has a light glaze, creating a simple and elegant contrast. The piece is made in high-temperature ceramics and responds to the Chinese taste for monochrome glazes, where the quality of color, the depth of the glaze and the harmony of form are the key elements.

From a historical point of view, this type of red glaze is linked to the tradition of copper glazes, developed in China from the Song dynasty (960-1279), when Chinese kilns began to experiment with monochrome colors of great subtlety. This research reached a high degree of sophistication during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties, periods in which reds - known as sang de boeuf, langyao or imperial reds - were especially prized and reserved, in many cases, for courtly or scholarly contexts.

The shape of the bowl and its three supports refer to objects used in the field of the scholar's study, such as small water containers, brush washers, bowls for diluted ink or auxiliary utensils in the practice of calligraphy and painting. They could also fulfill ritual or domestic functions, linked to simple offerings or refined daily use, always within a framework of aesthetic contemplation.

This type of piece continued to be produced during the following centuries as part of a conscious continuity of classical models, especially in later times, when Chinese workshops recreated historical forms and enamels for both the domestic and export markets. The bowl is therefore part of a long ceramic tradition in which the practical function and the symbolic and aesthetic dimension are closely linked.
