DESCRIPTION
Pair of ginger jars. China, Qing Dynasty, 1664-1991.
Enameled porcelain "ox blood".
Measurements: 22 x 22 cm.
These ginger jars, made of "ox blood" glazed porcelain, are a characteristic example of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). Their globular shape and short neck reflect the functional elegance of Chinese porcelain, while the intense red glaze, evenly applied, is evidence of technical mastery in the production of high-level monochrome pieces.
During the Qing dynasty, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, porcelain jars not only served practical functions in the storage of spices and foodstuffs, but were also symbols of status and domestic refinement. The deep red color, associated with good fortune and prosperity, was especially valued in domestic and ceremonial contexts. These types of pieces were produced for both domestic consumption by the elite and for export, reflecting the combination of artistic tradition, technical innovation and social meanings that characterized Qing porcelain.
