This enameled porcelain plate, produced in China during the Qing dynasty, illustrates the artistic dialogue between East and West. The delicate Chinese landscape in the center is combined with a rich floral border, while the Cuddon family crest reveals its origin as a heraldic commission for a European clientele. Beyond its decorative function, the piece stands out for its historical and symbolic value. The existence of an identical example in the collection of the Carnegie Museum of Art (no. 80.41.1) underscores its importance in 18th century Chinese export porcelain.
In China at the beginning of the 18th century, several technical advances in the manufacture of porcelain pieces were developed that provided a host of decorative effects unprecedented until then. Specifically, it was during the Yongzheng period when the refinement of the manufacture of this coveted material experienced a boom. The pieces made during these scarce thirteen years are highly valued both for their small number and for their enormous technical quality.
