This pair of cabinets is made of red lacquered elm wood, with a decoration that combines visual richness and craftsmanship refinement, and that has been exceptionally well preserved over the centuries. Each surface is adorned with motifs in gold leaf on lacquer, a classic technique of Chinese tradition, depicting precious objects of daily and ceremonial life: vases with flowers, fruit trays, censers, scholars' chests and kang tables, symbols of culture, well-being and status.
Along the frames, delicate inscriptions convey wishes for long life, good fortune and prosperity, executed with a level of detail that reflects the mastery of the craftsmen of the period. The lower panels feature the image of a young Buddha surrounded by dragons, creatures that in Chinese tradition represent protection and benevolence, framed by delicate foliage that adds dynamism and balance to the whole.
The sides are finished in burgundy lacquer with simple decoration, while the inner faces remain smooth, following the custom of the time for cabinets that were placed next to each other. The doors retain their original patinated bronze hardware, and the interiors feature functional shelves and compartments, including a hinged panel at the base that reveals a secret storage space, a further indication of the ingenuity of their design.
These cabinets are not only an example of Chinese decorative art in the Qing dynasty, but also a reflection of the cultural importance of lacquer and gold leaf as symbols of wealth, protection and elegance. Hailing from Shaanxi province, these pieces combine functionality and beauty, offering an exceptional glimpse into the world of 19th century Chinese high craftsmanship.
