BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Six-panel folding screen; China, Qing dynasty, XVII-XVIII.
Pine wood carved, polychromed and lacquered.
They are preserved in their original state.
Measurements: 224 x 45 x 6 cm.
Screen made up of six carved wood panels, an example of the interior architecture and decorative furniture of the Qing dynasty, dated between the XVII and XVIII centuries. These panels reflect Chinese master craftsmanship in woodworking and lacquer.
The delicate openwork latticework, with intertwined cherry blossom motifs, provides visual lightness and a subtle play of light and shadow, while the plant reliefs and hand-painted floral paintings enrich the ensemble with a refined ornamental language. Their modular design allowed for great spatial flexibility, dividing or unifying rooms according to the needs of the traditional Chinese home.
These panels are in the tradition of Chinese domestic architecture of the Qing dynasty, where interior spaces were conceived as flexible and changeable environments. Unlike fixed Western compartmentalization, traditional Chinese dwellings used screens and movable panels to regulate circulation, light and privacy. Hailing from Shanxi province, a historically prosperous region thanks to trade, these pieces reflect the high level of craftsmanship achieved between the 17th and 18th centuries, combining practical function and decorative symbolism.
