DESCRIPTION
Pair of Guanyin Bodhisattvas. China, Qing dynasty, Yongzheng period (1723-1735), 18th century.
Biscuit type porcelain with cold glazes, pink family (fencai).
In good condition, according to its age. Missing the phalanx of a finger on the left hand.
Measurements: 34 cm (height).
Refined sculptural couple representing Guanyin, bodhisattva of Compassion, made in biscuit porcelain finely modeled and decorated with cold enamels of the pink family, a technique that reached one of its most sophisticated moments during the reign of the emperor Yongzheng.
The figures appear standing, in a serene attitude, with their hands arranged in a devotional gesture. The faces, with delicate features and introspective expression, reflect the aesthetic ideal of the first third of the 18th century: soft ovals, low gaze and a slight smile that transmits spirituality and recollection. The treatment of the modeling is particularly careful in the folds of the cloaks, which fall with naturalism and balance, generating an elegant and harmonious vertical rhythm.
The wide cloaks are richly decorated with medallions and floral motifs painted in pink, green and blue tones, characteristic of the fencai palette. The application of glazes on a matte surface - typical of the biscuit type - produces a velvety tactile quality that enhances the sculptural dimension of the figures and allows for greater chromatic depth. The ornaments on the chest are meticulously highlighted, underlining the courtly character of the production.
The quality of the modeling, the chromatic subtlety and the stylized proportion place these pieces within the high-level production associated with the Yongzheng period, a period particularly appreciated for the restrained elegance and formal purity of its porcelains.
Devotional figures of this scale and quality are comparatively rare on the market, especially when presented in original pairs.
