BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Export tray with view of Batavia (Jakarta). Japan, Edo period, late 18th century.
Black lacquer with maki-e decoration and mother-of-pearl (raden) appliqués.
Probably made in Dejima, Nagasaki, by Dutch commission.

Measurements: 37,5 x 57,3 x 3 cm.

Interesting Japanese export tray made of black lacquer, decorated with an exotic scene representing a view of Batavia (present-day Jakarta) in the background, with identifiable colonial architecture on the horizon line. Two Indonesian figures and an elephant appear in the foreground, a motif that underlines the orientalizing and commercial character of the composition.

The scene is delicately executed using maki-e techniques in metallic powder and details in mother-of-pearl (raden) that provide iridescent reflections on the figures. The contrast between the dark background and the metallic sheens creates a refined visual effect, characteristic of productions destined for the foreign market.

During the Edo period, the Dejima enclave (Nagasaki) was the only Japanese port authorized for trade with the West, mainly with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In this context, a specific production of lacquerware for European customers emerged, with iconographies related to the Asian colonial territories under Dutch influence. The representation of Batavia - administrative center of the VOC in Asia - reinforces the hypothesis of a Dutch commission.

The raised and slightly molded rim corresponds to the functional format of a tray, while the lower inscription, probably added for the western market, confirms its export character.

This type of piece is a unique testimony to the artistic and commercial exchange between Japan and Europe in the 18th century, and to the role of Nagasaki as a cultural bridge between the two worlds.

It is a work of notable historical and collecting interest in the field of Japanese lacquerware for export.
