Freestanding figure carved from soft, marble-like stone (possibly steatite). The sculpture depicts Shou Lao, the Taoist deity of longevity and one of the Three Gods of Fortune (Fu, Lu, and Shou).
Within the Taoist pantheon and Chinese folk tradition, Shou Lao embodies health, revered wisdom, and a long, prosperous life. Commonly depicted with a large, domed forehead—symbolizing accumulated wisdom and knowledge of the secrets of immortality—these types of freestanding figures were traditionally given as gifts to the elders of the family on their birthdays as a wish for longevity. Carved from natural stone to highlight the block’s color hallmarks, these pieces held a place of honor in homes, household altars, and collectors’ cabinets throughout the 20th century.
