Guanyin; China, 20th century
Nephrite
Measurements: 30 x 25 x 8 cm.
A sculptural group carved from hard stone (possibly nephrite). The composition depicts the bodhisattva Guanyin riding a Qilin; the deity is shown standing upright on the animal’s back, dressed in a traditional monastic robe.
In China’s spiritual and decorative tradition, the figure of Guanyin riding a Qilin embodies two of the most powerful symbolic meanings in the popular imagination: Guanyin embodies infinite compassion, solace, and divine protection, while the Qilin symbolizes peace, prosperity, and the bestowal of noble offspring.
