Measurements: 42 x 33 x 12 cm.
Freestanding sculptural group carved from a hard stone of an intense green hue, possibly aventurine. The composition depicts the bodhisattva Guanyin, the deity of compassion and mercy, straddling the back of a Qilin, a protective mythological creature associated with prosperity, good fortune, and benevolence. Behind her is a prominent halo (prabhamandala) with a radiant outline and a serrated edge. The Qilin is holding a pearl of wisdom. The entire ensemble rests on a base carved to resemble cloud formations (xiangyun).
The iconography of Guanyin riding a Qilin is a recurring motif in Chinese devotional art of the Qing dynasty and the 20th century. This symbolic combination unites the bodhisattva’s infinite compassion with the auspices of peace, fertility, and protection embodied by the Qilin. These pieces were intended both for use on domestic altars to invoke family blessings and as collectible decorative objects, similar to bibelots.
