The piece is particularly significant for the clarity with which it brings together some of the fundamental elements of Tibetan Buddhist iconography: the serenity of the face, the half-closed eyes, the uṣṇīṣa or tuft of wisdom, the elongated earlobes and large earrings, as well as the elaborate rendering of the robes and the lotus pedestal. The gilded finish should not be understood solely as an ornamental device: in Buddhist sculpture, gold is closely associated with luminosity, spiritual perfection, and the transcendent nature of the Buddha. This sculpture depicts Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical founder of Buddhism, seated in the characteristic meditation posture on a lotus pedestal. His right hand extends downward to touch the earth, in the gesture known as bhūmisparśa mudrā, or “earth-touching gesture.” According to tradition, this gesture alludes to the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment, when he invoked the earth as a witness to his awakening.
Tibetan sculptural tradition developed its own language through a dialogue between various schools of Buddhist art in Asia, particularly those originating in India and Nepal. These influences are evident in the elegance of the anatomy, the idealized conception of the body, and the meticulous attention to detail—elements that made sculpture an essential vehicle for religious practice and meditation.
