Incense played a prominent role in religious life and in the scholar’s world, where its rising, shifting smoke was associated with clouds and with communication between the earthly and spiritual realms. For this reason, pieces such as this one became extremely popular. Its significance also lies in the combination of function, symbolism, and extraordinary ornamental richness. The body, crafted in cloisonné enamel on bronze, features an exuberant array of scrollwork, floral motifs, and auspicious elements against an intense turquoise background. The handles, shaped like foo dogs or guardian lions, reinforce the piece’s protective nature and lend it a powerful symbolic dimension.
Incense burners could also take on a second life as objects of contemplation: when not in use, it was customary to place them upside down, transforming a ritual utensil into an ornamental piece. This example thus embodies the Chinese ideal of an object in which art, spirituality, and functionality converge, and stands as a particularly striking example of the refinement achieved by cloisonné during the Qing Dynasty.
