This image shows a large carved statue of the Buddhist deity Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion and mercy. Guanyin is depicted standing upright with an openwork halo or mandorla adorned with flames behind her. She is dressed in flowing robes and holds a devotional beaded necklace in her hands.
This stylistic type is characteristic of Asian and East Asian Buddhist art (primarily of the Chinese tradition) from the late 19th or early 20th century.
