This sculpture is rendered with exceptional naturalism, evident in the tiger’s anatomy and the elaborate treatment of its surface. The animal is depicted in a resting pose, allowing the sculptor to focus on its powerful musculature, the volume of its torso, and the meticulous definition of its fur. The face, claws, and tufts of fur are rendered with particular precision, while the relaxed pose is a hallmark of the contained strength of the anatomy. This combination of naturalistic observation and technical virtuosity characterizes much of the Japanese animal sculpture produced during the Meiji period.

During the Meiji period, Japanese metalwork achieved an extraordinary degree of technical perfection, aided in part by the growing presence of Japanese arts in international exhibitions and markets. Naturalistic animal sculptures were one of its most prominent fields, combining meticulous observation of anatomy and fur with sophisticated techniques of casting, chiseling, and patination. The works signed by Atsuyoshi fit fully within this context, and there are also known works created in collaboration with the Maruki firm, which specialized in high-quality bronzes. Atsuyoshi was a Japanese sculptor and bronze caster active during the Meiji period, particularly renowned for his naturalistic depictions of animals. His body of work includes tigers, elephants, and birds, crafted with meticulous attention to movement, anatomy, and textures. Several works signed “Atsuyoshi saku” were produced for the Maruki company, one of the leading Japanese bronze foundries of the period, and examples of his tigers have appeared in major international auctions of Japanese art.
