DESCRIPTION
Incense burner; China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century.
Bronze.
Measurements: 18 x 34 x 27 cm.
This bronze incense burner follows the tradition of ritual and representational objects developed during the Qing Dynasty. Its circular body is adorned with raised bands and traditional ornamental motifs, most notably the taotie masks, one of the most emblematic motifs in the decorative repertoire of ancient China. In later periods, such as the Qing Dynasty, the taotie were revived as an archaizing motif, deliberately evoking the tradition of ancient Chinese ritual bronzes. The handles are shaped like lingzhi mushrooms, a traditional symbol of longevity, prosperity, and good fortune, while the vessel rests on three small supports that lend it stability and a striking sculptural presence.
Incense burners played an important role in both ritual practices and domestic and religious spaces. The aromatic smoke was associated with ceremonies, offerings, and moments of contemplation, but these objects also possessed an aesthetic and symbolic dimension. Their craftsmanship could transform them into true works of art, intended to be integrated into interiors as objects of contemplation even when not in use.
