Pair of folding armchairs. China, Qing Dynasty, late 19th–early 20th century.
Carved wood.
In good condition.
Measurements: 110.5 x 72 x 65 cm.
A pair of folding armchairs made in China during the Qing Dynasty, in the late 19th or early 20th century, whose design deliberately draws on models developed during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), considered one of the pinnacles of Chinese cabinetmaking. Their structure is inspired by the traditional folding armchairs known as jiaoyi—prestigious pieces of furniture historically associated with high-ranking figures and designed to combine functionality, lightness, and elegance. The wide, curved-profile backrests, extended to form the armrests, and the folding construction are direct references to this Ming tradition, though here they are enriched in accordance with Qing-era decorative tastes through more abundant and ornamental carving, particularly visible in the openwork panels of the backrest, the aprons, and the various structural elements. The pair thus constitutes an interesting example of the survival and reinterpretation of the great Ming furniture models during the late Qing period, combining a time-honored style with the decorative virtuosity characteristic of late Chinese production.
