The Pierres d'Orient et d'Occident line by Hermès, first published in 1988, is inspired by the Renaissance technique of marquetry in hard stones (pietra dura), combining decorative influences from the East and the West. The design presents a variegated composition in the manner of a polychrome mosaic, with ornately arranged plant, bird and insect motifs. The richness of detail and graphic precision are reminiscent of historic decorative arts.
