DESCRIPTION

Papyrus fragment with demotic scripts. Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic Period (332 - 30 B.C.).
Provenance: European private collection.
Measurements: 19 x 12.5 x 0.1 cm; 78 x 38 cm (overall size).

This papyrus fragment with demotic writing, from the Ptolemaic Period (332-30 B.C.), is presented as an exceptional piece both for its state of preservation and for the material and iconographic richness it preserves. Measuring approximately 19 x 12.5 cm, the document shows inscriptions written in black ink on a typically Egyptian vegetal support - papyrus - and in several of its fragments it is still possible to clearly read the fluid and condensed writing of the demotic system. This system, born as an evolution of hieratic around the 7th century BC, was widely used during the Greek domination of Egypt as a script for daily, legal, economic and religious use. From the form of the text and the graphic context, it is likely that this fragment contains magical formulas, religious records or funerary invocations. Although Greek became the official language in the Ptolemaic period, demotic remained alive among the Egyptian population, especially in Templar and religious environments. Similar manuscripts have appeared in sites such as Tebtunis, Oxyrhynchus and Hermopolis. Thousands of Ptolemaic fragments combining text and image have been documented at these sites. Many have been interpreted as ritual calendars, religious contracts or abridged versions of funerary books, reinforcing the importance of this fragment as a testimony to the cultural and religious syncretism of Greco-Roman Egypt.
