DESCRIPTION
Apsara or celestial dancer. India. Medieval Period, XII-XIII century.
Sandstone.
Provenance: private collection, Remis, France.
Good general condition, with losses commensurate with its age.
Measurements: 34 cm high.
Sculptural fragment representing an apsara or celestial dancer, usual figure in the ornamentation of Hindu temples and symbol of beauty, grace and idealized sensuality. These feminine divinities, associated with the celestial realm, embody cosmic harmony and aesthetic enjoyment, participating in the eternal celebration of the divine.
The figure, conceived in high relief, stands out for the softness of its volumes and the richness of its ornamentation. Despite the partial loss of the face, one can still perceive the elegance of the gesture and the subtle twisting of the body, characteristic features of medieval Indian sculpture, where movement and sensuality are integrated in a deeply spiritual language.
