Interesting and rare representation in small format of Ptolemy I Soter, one of the key figures of the Hellenistic world and founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great. This type of portrait, of an intimate nature and probably intended for private or devotional environments, reflects the spread of the dynastic cult and the consolidation of the image of the sovereign as an almost divine figure.

The bust presents the characteristic features of early Hellenistic portraiture: a search for individualization that is manifested in the structure of the face, of firm and serene forms, with naturalistic treatment of the short beard and the hair, arranged in orderly locks that frame the forehead. The restrained expression and the slightly elevated gaze evoke both the royal dignity and the aspiration to an idealized dimension, typical of the portraits of rulers of this period.

This type of sculpture is part of the Greek tradition of political portraiture, in which the image of the ruler becomes a vehicle of power, legitimacy and memory, marking the transition to the portrait models that would dominate the Roman world.
