Askos in the shape of a bird, from the area of Magna Grecia, specifically from the area of Teano, an important center of ceramic production in southern Italy during the fourth century BC. This type of vessel, intended to contain oils or perfumes, combines functionality and symbolic value through zoomorphic forms of great expressiveness.
The piece has a stylized globular body, with a pouring neck and a looped upper handle, naturally integrated into the silhouette of the animal. The decoration displays geometric and undulating motifs that emphasize volume and add dynamism, showing the influence of Apulian and Lucan ceramics.
Beyond their practical use, these objects often had a votive or funerary character, forming part of the trousseau in ritual contexts. Its careful execution and state of preservation make this example a particularly representative piece of figurative ceramics from southern Italy.
